University of Edinburgh

Research within Community Health Sciences at the University of Edinburgh is conducted within the Centre for Public Health and Primary Care Research. Within this centre, one of the key research topics is Effectiveness in primary care and public health which examines the evidence base of primary care and public health programmes. In primary care it focuses on clinical effectiveness and examines issues of uptake of research evidence and changing professional practice, while in public health it contributes to the evidence base of a range of contemporary programmes and initiatives. It brings together existing expertise in evaluative research from both the primary care and social processes interdisciplinary research groups and applies these skills to a range of topics including the organisation and delivery of care, mental health, clinical practice guidelines, and interventions to improve health and reduce risk factors.

Mental health as a key research interest
Dr Margaret Maxwell, who leads the regional EAAD project in Scotland, is a Senior Research Fellow in Primary Care Mental Health within the General Practice section of Community Health Sciences. Her role is to develop capacity in primary care mental health research and to promote research based developments in primary care based mental health service provision. She currently leads a research programme in primary care organisational responses to mental health needs.

EAAD Scotland
The planned site for the Scottish EAAD project is Lothian in Scotland. Lothian is the region in which the City of Edinburgh is located. It has a population of approx. 783,500 which is 15.2% of the Scottish population. Research (based on 1993-1994 figures) has shown a suicide rate in Lothian among young males as 28.7/100,000.

The EAAD project in Lothian is in the very early stages where we are attempting to bring many of the essential partners on board. The Scottish Executive's National Programme to Improve Mental Health and Well-being in Scotland is supportive of the EAAD initiative in Lothian and is keen to establish the effectiveness of the EAAD programme in improving mental health and mental health awareness.
