113 Suicide Prevention in the Netherlands are happy to share the great news that the "Integrated Suicide Prevention Act" (Wet integrale suïcidepreventie) was passed by the Dutch Senate in June 2024! This is an important step in tackling mental health issues and shows a strong commitment to suicide prevention.
The law aims to integrate suicide prevention into public health, making the government responsible for creating clear policies, including a National Suicide Prevention Agenda. Notably, the Act aligns with the EAAD model which highlights the need for coordinated efforts in mental health and suicide prevention.
Municipalities and other ministries will play key roles in local prevention efforts. The law is set to take effect on 1 July 2025.
During Prinsjesdag 2024 (the start of the parliamentary year), which took place on 17 September, the government emphasized that the Act is a vital part of the mental health policy, stressing the importance of teamwork between ministries and municipalities.
